Great British Spring Clean
The Great British Spring Clean is the UK’s largest mass litter-picking campaign, organised each year by the Keep Britain Tidy.
In March 2026 the Rushden Higham Ferrers Litter Wombles took part in the Great British Spring clean where we collected 20 bags of litter and 2 shopping trolleys.
This year’s Great British Spring Clean was on Duck Street Rushden.
We were greatful for the support from local volunteers and groups including: Asda Rushden, Booker Wellingborough, The Office of Gen Kitchen MP & The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Kettering Ward)
In March 2025 the Rushden Higham Ferrers Litter Wombles took part in the great British Spring Clean supported by volunteers and community groups and businesses including: Waitrose Rushden & The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Kettering Ward)
We were also joined by Cllr Coleman from Rushden Town Council who supported the group in obtaining equipment to help make the area a better place, we thank her for her dedication to the community of Rushden.
In total we collected around 25 bags of litter and pruned back some of the vegetation which was recycled using bags supplied by North Northamptonshire Council Garden waste service.
No Small Problem Campaign
The Rushden & Higham Ferrers Litter Wombles are a community litter-picking group established by Craig Blacha in 2024.
Their latest campaign is ‘No small problem’. The campaign, which has been running through December and January, aims to highlight that no matter how small an item, it’s still litter.
A common misconception is that cigarette butts aren’t litter but they make up for the largest found item in our streets.
Volunteer efforts in Higham Ferrers during January – the group collected 14 bags of litter from the School Lane Estate
What is no small problem is that North Northamptonshire Council spends an average of £3.2 million on street cleansing alone, money which might be better invested in the services that we use.
The group, made up of around 30 dedicated volunteers, is running various litter-picks at different locations during the campaign and is encouraging people to remember to recycle your rubbish at home or use a litter bin.
Social Events
The Committee has bought forward a motion to host a Social event once every other month, our social events are open to everyone.
Our first Social event was at the Rushden Historical Transport Society in a classic carriage
We started of our evening by having a brief training session with a cold beverage from the Station Bar whilst filling in our members survey.
Then onto Skittles a great time for us all to socialise together.
